Did you know that California boasts around 1400 river dams? Like very many rivers in the Northern atmosphere, the California rivers are regulated and impacted by dams, as well as diversions and chanelisation. This has impacted many parts of the rivers’ ecosystems, and especially the once robust salmon and trout runs. One of the scientists active in restoring and maintaining wild Pacific salmon populations on these regulated rivers is UC Davis Professor Greg Pasternack. We talk to him about his SHR project: Spawning Habitat Rehabilitation. Discover how Greg and colleagues use gravel injection, spawning bed enhancements and other tools to bring the rivers back to healthy fish life. Do visit Greg’s website also: it contains many interesting facts, photos and videos of his group’s activities.
